A rehabilitation center with 30 beds opened in Tashkent to assist and protect trafficking victims, Trend News reported citing the National Inter-Ministerial Committee to Combat Human Trafficking.

The center opened in accordance with governmental decree "On measures to improve efficiency in fighting human trafficking" dated July 2008.

The center will render emergency medical, psychological, legal and the other assistance to trafficking victims while observing their anonymity.

Uzbekistan has taken several measures aimed at combating human trafficking and preventing crimes in this category. The country has also established a legal basis to combat human trafficking and protect trafficking victims.

The law on "Combating Human trafficking" adopted in April 2008 provides trafficking victims with social rehabilitation, welfare, employment and temporary accommodation.

Uzbekistan has ratified major international documents to combat illegal human trafficking. The country adopted a national action plan to improve the fight against trafficking in 2008-2010.

Cooperation between law enforcement agencies and NGOs started propaganda work, training, round-table talks and various other arrangements for the population.

Uzbek law enforcement agencies charged 891 criminals with human trafficking in 2008, which was a 2.5-time increase from 2007.
