Thursday, 19 November 2009Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Wednesday that Turkey's EU membership would end cultural cold war and east-west tension.
Delivering a speech in the 6th Turkish-Italian Forum at Conrad Hotel in Istanbul, Davutoglu said that Turkey and Italy were two friendly and allied countries. The two countries' similar approaches regarding the future of EU, their Mediterranean visions and the importance that Turkey and Italy attached to transatlantic relations brought a sound ground to the relations, he said.
"Turkey and EU share a common vision for the future of Europe," Davutoglu said.
He said Turkey's basic strategic goal and state policy was to become a full member of the EU, and the country's EU process was the one of the most important parts of Turkey's social and political life.
"We fulfilled our duties (in regard to Turkey's EU accession process). We expect the EU to stick to its commitments. EU should carry out the accession process objectively," Davutoglu said.
Turkey attached a great importance to Italy's support to Turkey's EU accession process, he said.
