The head of the American Turkish Council (ATC) said Wednesday that the United States needed Turkey in the East.
ATC's Chairman General Brent Scowcroft said that the United States needed someone's help and assistance in the East, particularly Turkey in a region that the U.S. could not perceive as well as Turkey.
The Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey (DEIK) and Turkish American Business Council hosted a dinner in honor of General Scowcroft, who will hand over the mandate to U.S. ambassador Richard Armitage as of January 1, 2010.
Scowcroft has been the head of the council for nine years.
General Scowcroft came to the Turkish capital of Ankara on Tuesday and met Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug and members of the Turkish American Friendship Group at the Turkish Parliament, and discussed economic and commercial issues.
During the dinner, Scowcroft said energy was a common issue concerning Turkey and the United States, and it was at the same time the weakest point of the two countries.
Scowcroft also said ATC and DEIK could cooperate and prepare protocols supporting investments.
As one of the leading business associations in the United States, American Turkish Council is dedicated to effectively strengthening US-Turkish relations through the promotion of commercial, defense, technology and cultural relations.
Its diverse membership includes Fortune 500, U.S. and Turkish companies, multinationals, nonprofit organizations and individuals with an interest in US-Turkish relations. Guided by member interests, ATC strives to enhance the growing ties between the US and Turkey by initiating and facilitating efforts to increase investment and trade between the two countries.
