President Dmitry Medvedev said Russia and the European Union agreed on key issues of energy cooperation and security at their summit on Wednesday.

The EU-Russia summit was hosted by Sweden, the current holder of the EU presidency.

"We discussed the development of major economic projects, and issues of energy cooperation, and developing and ensuring energy security in Europe. On this issue, I believe we reached a good mutual understanding," Medvedev said after the talks.

"I again drew our partners' attention to the energy initiative proposed by Russia in addition to the existing energy documents, including the Energy Charter."

"On this issue, I believe we need to continue exchanging opinions, in order to develop an international basis for energy cooperation in the future," he said.

Russia has so far refused to ratify the existing European Energy Charter, which governs energy relations between 53 countries and organizations. In April 2008, President Medvedev proposed a new energy pact, saying the current charter fails to balance the interests of producers, transit countries and consumers.
