MOVE DEBATED AT THE PARLIAMENT
Democratic move, which Turkish has been talking about for months, was debated during historical session in the Parliament.
Republican People's Party (CHP) protested and left the parliament when Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused CHP and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) to want more funerals of martyrs.
20 DEATHS IN ONE DAY
Health Ministry said 20 people died because of swine flu on Friday, rising the death toll to 60.
The ministry said 202 people were under treatment in hospitals, noting 40 of them were in intensive care units.
RELEASE TO CICEK IN 43 HOURS
The 9th High Criminal Court delegation assessed the request of lawyer of Colonel Dursun Cicek, who was arrested on charges that he has wet signature in the "action plan to fight against fundamentalism", to be released.
The delegation later decided for the release of Cicek with majority of vote.

TWENTY DEATHS IN TWO DAYS
The number of deaths due to swine-flu reached 60. The Ministry of health announced that majority of the deceased had chronic sickness. Ministry said 202 people were hospitalised due to swine-flu; 40 of these were in intensive care and eleven were tied to respirators. It said 250 thousand people were vaccinated so far,noting that vaccination of infants and children between six months old to age 5, would begin on November 16.

Colonel Dursun Cicek who was summoned to the prosecutor's office after the Taraf daily published the "Action Plan for Fighting Reactionaries", was arrested and sent to Hasdal prison.

Cicek's lawyers appealed the arrest which was based on a photocopy document. This is how Cicek greeted people passing by from the car after he was released due to insufficient evidence.
11.11.2009/10:15 pm
Four months later. The prosecutor's office announced that it received the original document. And Cicek who was summoned to the prosecutor's office once more got arrested and sent to prison.

And the Colonel goes free once again. The court unanimously decided for the release of Cicek as he was not suspected to escape. Dursun Cicek was released from the Hasdal prison 43 hours later.

NOT DEATH, BUT SOLUTION
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed general assembly in the historic session of the parliament on democratic move and relayed important messages.
"This is not the day to shout, but the day to find remedy to deaths. I
believe today should be accepted as a start, a milestone for Turkey," Erdogan said.
HERE IS THE ROAD MAP OF THAT MOVE
1-Amendments will be made in the Constitution with the possible largest participation and consensus apart from the first three articles.
2-Names of the regional units, whose names were changed, would be given their former names in case of local request.
3-Opportunities would be given to make propaganda in different languages and dialects in the election campaigns of political parties.
4-An independent commission would be established to deal with
discrimination.
5-Cautionary protocol of the United Nations Convention against torture would be approved.

IN THE END THEY MADE IT PUBLIC
The government brought Kurdish move to the parliament to be debated after 3.5 months. Republican People's Party (CHP) chairman Deniz Baykal and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chairman Devlet Bahceli said they would not contribute it.
CHP group left the hall after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's statement that there were people who want to exploit the funerals of martyrs. Erdogan's statements escalated tension.
20 VICTIMS TO SWINE FLU IN 2 DAYS
Health Ministry announced number of people who died of swine flu as 40 on Wednesday. No statement was made on Thursday, but on Friday the ministry said 20 people died of swine flu in various provinces.
Thus number of people who lost their lives of swine flu reached 60 since October 25, when the first victim was announced.

OPEN-ENDED INITIATIVE
The Interior Minister Besir Atalay who announced some of the medium and short term steps of the initiative, during the general debate in the parliament signalled constitutional amendments. Atalay said elective "Kurdish" classes would be given in schools and an anti-segregation commission would be founded.
When Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said those who opposed the process wanted more soldier funerals, Republican People's Party (CHP) group left the general assembly.
CHP Leader Baykal said rather than an initiative for PKK, they wanted a
Kurdish initiative. Replying to Erdogan's remarks CHP leader said "They are destroying and separating the country." Nationalist Movement Party Leader, Bahceli said the initiative was imposed by the Greater Middle East Project. Democratic Society Party Leader Ahmet Turk said arms would be out of Turkey's agenda in three months if the government showed a serious approach for the solution of the problem.
HAS NO PLACE IN DEMOCRACY
Council of State President Mustafa Birden said developments harming the separation of powers principle was taking place noting that tapping of phones belonging to members of the judiciary aimed at effecting justice. Birden said these acts were not in compliance with the concept of "democratic country".
Supreme Court President Hasan Gerceker said the judiciary was made into a target, and called on the government to quit illegal actions and activities. Gerceker who said that he totally agreed with the remarks of the Chairman of the supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors said it was unacceptable that judiciary was put in a position to defend itself.

WE WATCHED FOR 6 HOURS, BUT...
The government, after facing the criticisms for months that they did not
explain what the Kurdish move was, gave an appointment at the parliament on November 13.
Prime minister was to explain the issue in the Parliament.
Television channels started to broadcast the "historic day" without any
intervals.
First, Interior Minister Besir Atalay took the floor at the parliament and
gave only one information which was not known before. He said a commission would be established to deal with against discrimination.
Atalay ended his words saying the prime minister would give the details. However, prime minister's speech did not include any details or surprise.

Health Ministry made public the list of people who died of swine flu. 20
people died in two days because of H1N1. Death toll raised to 60. 202 people are under treatment in hospitals. 40 of them are under intensive care unit.
The ministry estimated that 400,000 people had been infected with the
disease.
Children would be vaccinated on Monday.

TODAY IS A MILESTONE
Parliament debated the move. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "we have initiated the vital process. We will make bold steps for fraternity".
Erdogan said Turkey has been living with the terrorism problem for 25 years.
"We made a bold step. We have a historic opportunity. 72 million people will win in the end. Horizons will be opened for our country. We will build future days without offending any people."
WE WILL NOT BOW TO ETHNICAL DISINTEGRATION
Republican People's Party (CHP) chairman Deniz Baykal defended that the move was towards PKK and noted, "the move is a dead end street. Ethnical identity can not be a tool for discrimination. Whatever rights the others have, Kurds should also have them."
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chairman Devlet Bahceli said terrorists should surrender and given necessary punishment, going to mountains should be stopped and investment to the region should rise.
Democratic Society Party (DTP) chairman Ahmet Turk said PKK was a
consequence of the political mistakes. He said, "nobody has problems with the borders or the flag. Common language of the country is Turkish. A commission should be established within the parliament for the solution of the Kurdish problem."

WE SHOULD THINK AS BIG AS IN 1923
Debates started on Friday in the Parliament on the "democratic move" which the government called as "National Unity and Fraternity" project.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan took the floor after all the political
party leaders delivered their speeches. He said, "Turkish Republic should think as big as it had on October 29, 1923."
He said, "what we want from the democratic move was a Turkey minimizing its problems. Turkey can not continue to walk its path with non-existing new threats, fears and hostilities as the world is changing."
COLONEL CICEK WAS RELEASED AS PRIME MINISTER TALKING AT THE PARLIAMENT
Colonel Dursun Cicek, who has signature in the "Chaos Plan", stayed under arrest for 43 hours.
Conditional Release decision was made saying there was not any probability for him to flee abroad.
HIGH SPEED TRAIN DERAILED, NO CASUALTIES
A high-speed train derailed near a Central Anatolian province in Turkey on Friday. There were no reports of casualties.
Two cars of a high-speed train travelling from the capital Ankara to the
central province of Eskisehir derailed near Eskisehir's Hasanbey village (some 10 kilometers from the city).
Eight passengers were hospitalized because of shock of fear.

INDIVIDUALS WERE MONITORED NOT JUCIARY
Ministry of Justice Sadullah Ergin refused allegations that the Judiciary
was being monitored and said "individuals are monitored and not instituions".
The phone tappings which were made with court order did not target the Supreme Court or the Istanbul Court House, but those judges and prosecutors against whom serious claims and accusations were placed.
Minister Ergin who pointed out that the phone-tappings did not target
specific institutions, said, "Please, check how many judges were prosecuted with the evidence from the phone tapping."
A TOTAL OF 61 HOURS
Colonel Dursun Cicek who was arrested under charges of "plotting to stage a military coup" following his interrogation by Ergenekon prosecutors, was released by the 9th Criminal Court. The court released Cicek pending trial on the grounds that he was not suspected to escape or spoil evidence.
Colonel Cicek who was arrested once the forensic report revealed that the signature on the plot document belonged to him was released 43 hours later. Cicek was also arrested when the document was first published in June and was released in 18 hours. The number of hours Cicek spent in prison amounted to 61.
In stead of the Court President, Yilmaz Alp who was, appointed by the
Supreme Court of Prosecutors and Judges in the summer attended the session which decided Cicek's release. Cicek who was released by two votes against one , was relased in June again with the vote of a member who was appointed to the court at midnight. |
