Tuesday, 10 November 2009Turkey's permanent representative to the United Nations Ertugrul Apakan said in the aftermath of the presidential election that Afghanistan should refocus its energy on national reconciliation and reconstruction efforts.
Ambassador Apakan expressed Turkey's views on Afghanistan during a session held on this country Monday at the UN General Assembly.
Apakan who pointed out that Afghanistan was going through a critical period said Turkey nevertheless was hopeful about its future.
Apakan said the terrorist attack which targeted the UN office in Kabul on October 28 should not dismay anyone, adding that a strong UN presence in this country was crucial.
He said he wished the new administration in Afghanistan would reach all ethnic groups in Afghanistan, urging it to refocus its energy on efforts for reconciliation and reconstruction.
Apakan said Turkey carried out the most extensive humanitarian aid operation of its history in Afghanistan, noting that as of 2009 Turkey assumed the command of the ISAF in Kabul, a NATO led international peace keeping force in Afghanistan.
Apakan said Afghanistan needed a comprehensive approach in the areas of security, public administration, rule of law, human rights and social and economic development. |
