Monday, 9 November 2009Turkish premier has strongly rejected claims that his country had shifted its foreign policy orientation.
"Turkey's foreign policy is not shifting its direction or its axis. But it is normalising and telling what is fair. Turkey cannot turn its back on the East for it is directed toward the West," Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Sunday when addressing supporters and members of his Justice and Development (AK) Party in a local meeting.
"Turkey cannot remain indifferent to the South just because it is engaged in cooperation with the North," he said.
Erdogan said Turkey's foreign policy aimed at "gaining friends rather than creating enemies. Our foreign policy seeks to embrace everyone."
Speaking on the government's initiative to widen democratic rights and freedoms, Erdogan said the democratic process had yet to be completed.
"The reason the state exists is to minimize problems of its citizens. We are not done with the democratic move," Erdogan said. |
