The Turkish Cypriot president said on Friday that European Union's (EU) support for a settlement in Cyprus was necessary.

President Mehmet Ali Talat of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said, "I told European Commissioner for enlargement Olli Rehn that either the Commission or the member states could extend this support," Talat told the Turkish Cypriot news agency.

Talat completed his visit to the Belgian capital of Brussels and returned to Lefkosa, TRNC on Thursday. In Brussels, Talat attended a conference at the Center of European Policy Studies (CEPS), held talks with the Group of Liberal, Socialist Group, and Committee on External Relations of the European Parliament.

Talat said he discussed with EU officials possible contributions of the union to a settlement in the island, and how they could motivate the Greek Cypriot administration. The Turkish Cypriot president quoted Rehn as saying that the union was expecting a solution as soon as possible.

Talat said he believed TRNC should continue its talks with the EU in every level.

President Talat will meet Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias at the buffer zone in Lefkosa at 4 p.m. on Friday within the scope on ongoing Cyprus negotiations. Talat and Christofias are expected to debate property issue in their 50th meeting.
