Wednesday, 4 November 2009The United Nations General Assembly is meeting to discuss a U.N. report that alleges both Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas committed war crimes during their conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assembly Wednesday debates a resolution on the report, and a vote could come as early as Wednesday evening.
South African judge Richard Goldstone wrote the report based on a U.N. fact-finding mission on the Gaza conflict. It recommends that Israel and Hamas face potential prosecution in The Hague if they do not conduct credible investigations within six months.
Both Israel and Hamas have denied allegations of war crimes during the Gaza conflict that ended in January. Some 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed in the three-week offensive, which Israel says it launched to stop Palestinian militant rocket attacks against Israel.
Israel's deputy foreign minister, Danny Ayalon, Tuesday urged countries to oppose the report, saying it damages any peace-seeking democratic country dealing with terrorism.
He accused Palestinians of "manipulating" international bodies in order to hurt Israel.
Also Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a resolution condemning the report, in a 344-to-36 vote. U.S. lawmakers called the U.N. probe biased and a threat to the Middle East peace process.
