The head of the regional administration in north of Iraq, Masoud Barzani, said Friday Turkey's role was crucial for the future of the region and the development of economic relations.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in the Iraqi city of Irbil, Barzani said that Davutoglu's visit to the region was highly important.
The decision taken by Turkey to open a consulate general in Irbil is an extremely positive development for the region, Barzani said.
Nowadays, the Middle East is going through a sensitive period. Turkey's role is important for the future of the region and the further growth of economic ties. As the people of Iraq, we pay high attention to relations with Turkey. The region of Kurdistan plays the role of a bridge for Iraq as this region is one with stability, Barzani said.
We support the steps taken by Turkey as part of the "democratic move" and thank Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for these steps, Barzani stressed.
By God's help, we hope that violence ends in the shortest time possible so that there is no bloodshed of either Kurdish or Turkish youth. I believe Prime Minister Erdogan's policy on the matter will reach a good result. I congratulate Mr. Davutoglu for his role in the matter. He plays an important role for Turkey and the region, Barzani said.
In response to a question on relations between Turkey and the regional administration in north of Iraq, Barzani said that he did not see natural the existence of problems.
The status quo of relations between Turkey and the regional administration in north of Iraq is what it should be naturally. I believe we can further develop relations. Our ties will develop as a result of Mr. Davutoglu's current visit to the region. The policy pursued by Turkey recently is accurate and we are ready to extend full support. Our discussions took place in a brotherly and positive atmosphere, Barzani noted.
In regard to a question on terror, Barzani said that they did not approve any violence.
We are saddened over the bloodshed of Turkish and Kurdish youth. Erdogan's policy intends to solve the reasons behind violence. We support the bold step taken by Turkey and are in cooperation with Turkey, Barzani also said.
Following the end of the joint press conference, Barzani hosted a dinner for Davutoglu and his delegation.
