Turkish President Abdullah Gul visited Chapel of the Peace and the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, the capital of Vojvodina Autonomous Region, as part of his formal trip to Serbia.
Serbian President Boris Tadic accompanied Gul during the visit to the Chapel, the venue where the Treaty of Karlowitz, was signed to mark the beginning of the Ottoman decline in Europe.
Gul and Tadic later visited Petrovaradin Fortress and the museum there.
"Turkey and Serbia shares a common history and today the two countries are in a historic relationship. Turkey and Serbia will work together to bring peace to the Balkans. I believe we will achieve great many things as partners and friends which would set a model for everyone," Gul said.
The Serbian president said on his part that the level of relations between Turkey and Serbia was important for both countries.
"Turkey is a great country. Peace cannot be achieved anywhere in the world without achieving peace with Turkey," Tadic said.
