Police say two people have been arrested, including the owner of the warehouse.
Tenother people were reported injured in the fire late Friday on the eveof the Diwali holiday, also known as the festival of lights.
The deadly fire ignited in a warehouse in the village of Pallipat, 90 kilometers from the port city of Chennai.
Among the victims were people buying firecrackers for the holiday.
Diwalicelebrations are spread over several days and involve wearing newclothes, sharing sweets and snacks, as well as lighting many lamps,candles and firecrackers.
