Saturday, 17 October 2009Turkish State Minister and Chief Negotiator for EU talks, Egemen Bagis, said Friday the recent EU Progress Report on Turkey affirmed progress in at least 11 chapters.
"The waves are currently high but we continue to swim," Bagis stressed.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Sixth Bogazici Conference in Istanbul, Bagis said that in its history of around 1,000 years, Turkey has always turned its face towards the west.
We came from Central Asia and went up to the gates of Vienna. Now, we are at Brussels' gates but for a peaceful goal, Bagis said.
The EU is the engine of change in Turkey. There are still many things to be done and many are being done presently, Bagis noted.
Touching on the issue of Cyprus, Bagis said that Turkey expects the EU to begin direct trade with Northern Cyprus after which Turkey would open all of its ports (for Greek Cypriot vessels).
We should support and encourage both presidents (Mehmet Ali Talat and Demetris Christofias) in Cyprus, Bagis also said. |
