The first consultative meeting of member-states of the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty took place in Ashgabat on Oct. 15, the press service of country's foreign ministry reported.

It was attended by government delegations of Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as representatives of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy.

These are the first steps to implement the Treaty, signed in September 2006 in Semipalatinsk by all the Central Asian states and supported by the international community through the UN.


The meeting identified further joint efforts of Central Asian countries aimed at fulfilling the obligations stipulated in the document, cooperation with international organizations regarding disarmament issues, resolved a number of procedural interaction.

Foreign Ministry notes that the Ashgabat meeting demonstrated the resoluteness of the parties to fully cooperate on the disarmament process in the region, which assumes importance in the context of global efforts to reduce arsenals of weapons of mass destruction, peace, stability and security globally.
