"WE SHOULD SOLVE OUR OWN PROBLEMS, NOT SOMEONE ELSE'S"
President Abdullah Gul addressed the parliament to mark the beginning of the new legislative year. Gul said, "Turkey must solve its problems on its own. States, which cannot solve their problems with their own will, are open to exploitation by others." President Gul said that domestic problems should be resolved through democratic methods.

PROTESTOR THROWS SHOE AT IMF CHIEF
Protestor Selcuk Ozbek threw a shoe at International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn during a conference at Istanbul's Bilgi University, but the shoe fell short hitting him. Ozbek ran toward the stage shouting "IMF get out!"

FENERBAHCE DEFEAT FC SHERIFF IN UEFA LEAGUE
Fenerbahce soccer club of Turkey defeated FC Sheriff of Moldova 1-0 in
Tiraspol in Group H in the UEFA Europa League. Fenerbahce are now in the third place in Group H. Galatasaray drew 1-1 with SK Sturm Graz of Austria in a home UEFA Europa League Group F match.

"IF WE DON'T SOLVE IT, OTHERS WILL"
President Abdullah Gul who made the opening speech of the new legislative year in the parliament, said "a democratic state does not try to mould diversities in to a single model and alienate them. A state afraid of diversities can't reach the goal of modern state laid down by Ataturk." Gul who pointed out that Turkey had to solve its problems on its own said, "If a state has problems eating it from the inside out, this would inevitably create areas vulnerable to foreign intervention."

DENIZ SEKI RELEASED AFTER 218 DAYS
Renown singer Deniz Seki who had been under arrest since February 24 for using and dealing illicit drugs was released in the first court hearing pending trial. Seki who was released Thursday evening said, "there is nothing more valuable than freedom."

PRESENCE OF ANOTHER GARIPOGLU CLEAR
According to the final report of Forensic Medicine Department, it has been determined that, apart from Cem, another man from Garipoglu family took part in the murder of Munevver Karabulut as well. In Forensic Medicine's second examination, tissue samples of father Nida and brother Levent were compared with the tissues found under the fingernails of Munevver Karabulut and DNAs of another member of Garipoglu family were identified.

DIFFERENCE OF NEW TURKEY
Journalist Selcuk Ozbek threw a shoe at IMF's Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, protesting him during a conference in Istanbul. Ozbek, who was taken into custody following the incident, was released 8 hours after the incident. Kahn did not file a complaint against Ozbek and said, "Turkish students were polite and they waited until the end of the conference to protest".

RESCUE PLAN FOR DTP DEPUTIES
Politicians started to take action concerning the "testimony crisis" with
Democratic Society Party (DTP) deputies that caused tension in capital Ankara. Making the first move on the issue, Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "We do not want any individual to be judged for his/her thoughts". Erdogan also expressed his support for a constitutional or legal amendment.

COMMANDERS END DTP BOYCOTT AFTER 26 MONTHS
Commanders earlier did not attend the ceremonies to mark the beginning of legislative year in order to protest the Democratic Society Party (DTP). Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug and force commanders participated in the ceremony on occasion of the new legislative year on Thursday and ended boycotting DTP after 26 months.

"WE SHOULD SPEED UP FOR DEMOCRATIC MOVE"
President Abdullah Gul delivered a speech in the parliament to mark the beginning of the new legislative year. Gul said, "these positive conditions will not last forever. We should be resolute." President Gul said that they could implement new methods which would leave terrorism behind.

BUSINESS WORLD PROTESTS PRESSURES
Taking the floor at a high consultative meeting of the Turkish Businessmen's and Industrialists' Association (TUSIAD), Mustafa Koc said the business world was seriously concerned about the recent politicization of the tax regime. Koc who stressed that an executive branch keeping public interests over partisan ends was needed, said, "We need to add; a press that is completely free by all means, citizens with freedom of expression, autonomous bodies and civil organizations, among elements safeguarding the modern democracy."
TUSIAD Chairperson Arzuhan Dogan Yalcindag said they had been arguing since 2001 that the tax authority ought to be made autonomous, noting that if this had been done, the black economy would not have grown, while on the other hand the tax record holder companies were being pressured with years of close tax scrutiny. Yalcindag said it was unfortunate for tax, an element of the culture of democracy, to turn into a tool that was damaging Turkey's democratic prestige.

PROTESTOR THROWS SHOE AT IMF CHIEF
International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn who gave a conference at the Istanbul Bilgi University was welcomed with "a shoe protest". Politics editor of "Birgun" daily, Selcuk Ozbek who threw the shoe at the IMF's chief, was released when Strauss-Kahn did not file a complaint.
Another group staged a protest in front of the Dolapdere campus of Bilgi University. Members of the Student Collective and "Halkevleri", held placards written "Public Enemy IMF & WB, get off" and chanted "IMF get off, this country is not for sale."

Expressing support for Democratic Society Party (DTP) deputies, Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that they were ready for a constitutional amendment.
"We do not want people to be judged because of their opinions," Erdogan said.

SHOE THROWN AT IMF
A young protestor threw a shoe at IMF's Managing Director Dominique
Strauss-Kahn while he was delivering a speech at Istanbul Bilgi University. The protestor was released as the IMF head did not file a complaint against him.

GUL: "TURKISH NATION HAS DEMANDED DEMOCRATIC MOVE"
President Abdullah Gul said a democratic state should see social and
cultural differences as a richness and should accept such differences instead of trying to eliminate them. Gul said the state was working to fulfill democratic demands of the nation.

MARKETS GETTING BETTER
Jorg Decressin, a division chief with the research department of
International Monetary Fund (IMF), said that Turkey would grow better than expectations in 2010. "Turkey is a big country and its industry is also big," Decressin said. IMF released "World Economic Outlook" report in Istanbul. The report said that global economy would grow 3.1 percent in 2010.

ERDOGAN SIGNALS GREEN LIGHT TO AMEND CONSTITUTION TO SAVE DTP DEPUTIES
The decision of a criminal court in Ankara to bring DTP deputies to testify to the court with police force if necessary, climbed high on agenda in the opening of the legislative year. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who does not want Emine Ayna, Selehattin Demirtas, Aysel Tugluk and Sebahat Tuncel to be brought to court with police force, said, "we are in for an amendment to the constitution or the laws. If the opposition is also ready for this, we can do it together."
Erdogan said the problem stemmed from the provisions of Article 14.
"We don't want anyone to be tried because of their opinions, be it lawmakers or others," said Erdogan.

3.1 BILLION COMES OUT OF STASHES WITH CASH REPETRIATION CAMPAIGN
The total cash stated under the second term of "Cash Repatriation Campaign" which was extended for a second time four days ago amounted to 3.1 billion TL. While citizens in Turkey showed great interest in the campaign, citizens residing in other countries rather remained distant. It was observed that citizens living abroad and Turkish businessmen were not eager to bring in their savings.
According to bank figures, some 82 percent of the money stated between June 10 and September 30 (2,542 million TL) came from the stashes while the remaining 600 million were stated from abroad through tax offices and banks.

Iraqi journalist al-Zaidi's throwing a shoe at former U.S. President George Bush has become a popular act of protest. Turkish journalist Selcuk Ozbek also threw one of his Nike trainers at IMF's Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
"He waited for my speech to end. It was a polite protest," Strauss-Kahn said after the incident and he did not file a complaint against the protestor.

OPENING WITH "MOVE"
"Democratic move" was on the agenda of the ceremony held at the Turkish parliament to mark the beginning of the new legislative year. Commanders, who did not attend the last two year's ceremonies to protest Democratic Society Party (DTP), attended the opening this year.
Delivering a speech, President Abdullah Gul talked about the virtues of
democracy and expressed the importance of "keeping social and political
differences alive together".
