Thursday, 1 October 2009A senior member of an influential business association in Turkey urged the government Thursday to lower a 10 percent election threshold.
"If we are to speak about a democratic move, ways must be explored to lower the threshold and widen political representation at the parliament," said Mustafa Koc, head of a consultation committee with the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association.
Koc was referring to a recent steps taken by the Turkish government to widen democratic rights and freedoms, which is publicly known as "the democratic move."
"We think that the government's democratic move is a timely and positive initiative. We do support it on the condition that it would not create any hesitation over improving individual and cultural rights. However, without a fair representation at the parliament, could it possible to speak about a democratic move?" Koc said. |
