Tuesday, 29 September 2009President Mehmet Ali Talat of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Monday that he had invited the Secretary General of the United Nations to Cyprus, adding that the UN head's visit to the island would be of great importance.
TRNC President Talat spoke to reporters following his meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the UN headquarters in New York.
Describing the meeting as quite fruitful, Talat said he had informed Ban on the latest situation in Cyprus.
Talat said the UN SG did not have any officially scheduled visits to Cyprus at the moment, adding that such a visit would bring motivation to the ongoing process in the island.
"I told the Secretary General that solution of the Cyprus issue would be very difficult if parties stepped out of UN parameters," Talat said.
Upon a question on his expectations from the second round of peace talks in Cyprus, Talat said that the process should be speeded up as a solution was needed in the island until the end of this year or the beginning of next year the latest.
"We have a time limitation. Elections will be held in TRNC in April 2010. We want to reach a comprehensive solution until that time," he said.
Talat also called on Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias to stay within UN parameters while making suggestions and not to make proposals such as formation of a federation with autonomous regions. |
