PREMIER SAYS ARMENIAN VOTE IN OCTOBER
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the parliament could vote on
October 10 or 11 two agreements with Armenia to normalize and develop bilateral relations. "Turkish-Armenian relations have reached a new level through Swiss mediation. I believe that the agreements we have initialed would be submitted to the parliament if political biases and concerns do not get on the way. And we would have taken those steps by October 10 or 11," Erdogan said in a speech he delivered at the Princeton University.

COURT ISSUES ARREST WARRANT ON DEPUTY POLICE CHIEF
An Istanbul court issued an arrest warrant for Deputy Director-General of the Police Department, Emin Arslan, for his suspected involvement in a drug trafficking ring after anti-narcotics teams detected he had had several phone conversations with a senior ring member. A government order to relieve Arslan off duty was sent to the president's office for approval.

U2 TO ROCK ISTANBUL IN 2010
Legendary rock band U2 is set to give a concert in Istanbul on September 6, 2010 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, the band said in a statement posted on its web-site. The date of the concert was announced just hours after Bono pledged to include Istanbul in band's tour list in a brief meeting with State Minister Egemen Bagis in New York.

NUCLEAR TRAFFIC OF PRIME MINISTER
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed participants at UN Security Council's Summit and UN's 64th General Assembly. Erdogan, at Security Council, said, "we think that having weapons of mass destruction does not bring extra security to any country in this era." Erdogan said that he would visit Iran in October or November. He also met with Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

ERDOGAN AND OBAMA PROPOSE A TOAST
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is in New York, attended the
luncheon which was hosted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in the United Nations building. Erdogan proposed a toast with U.S. President Barack Obama at the luncheon.

WARRANT OF ARREST FOR EMIN ARSLAN
A warrant of arrest was issued for Emin Arslan, Deputy Director General of Security Department, whose name was involved in illicit drug operation of Istanbul police. Arslan, who was on leave, said that he would go to court house with his lawyers today. Arslan said that he believed justice would be served, and added, "I did not commit any crime. I think there is a misinterpretation. The truth will be revealed in time."

"WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION CANNOT ENSURE OUR SECURITY"
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a speech at the UN General Assembly, "having weapons of mass destruction does not ensure our security." He also underlined the right to access to civil nuclear technologies for countries which abide by inspection rules.

"ERDOGAN IS OUR ROLE MODEL"
Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi's son Sayf-al-Islam al-Qadhafi who is expected to succeed his father said that Turkey was a modern country and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was their role model.

FLOODS CLAIM FIVE LIVES IN ARTVIN
Flood waters triggered by torrential rains claimed five lives in northern
Turkey. Four people were killed when their four-storey house demolished in Borcka town of Artvin. One person lost her life after being carried away by flood waters in the village of Demirciler.

I DON'T WANT TO LIVE IN A DISHONORABLE EUROPE
Nobel Peace Prize winner and Finland's former president Martti Ahtisaari attended a conference in New York and criticised the EU for putting artificial obstacles before Turkey's membership. Ahtisaari said that there was no reason for the EU to be afraid of young and energetic Turkey, adding that putting artificial obstacles before Turkey was dishonorable, and said that he did not want to live in a Europe which acted without honor.

BEST CENTRAL BANK GOVERNOR AWARD TO YILMAZ
American Euromoney magazine chose Durmus Yilmaz as the best central bank governor of 2009. The magazine defined Yilmaz, who started his term in office in 2006, as the most ideal name that would direct Turkish economy. Yilmaz will receive his award at Hilton Hotel in Istanbul on October 6.

OPPOSITION LEADER CALLS FOR FRESH START IN TURKEY-EU RELATIONS
Leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), Deniz Baykal, called for "a new understanding" in relations with the European Union. "We need to reset relations with the EU, which would help us solve many issues," he said during a meeting with EU ambassadors. Baykal said Turkey-EU relations have seen a relatively slow pace of progress over the last years and "they even came to a stand still."

FLOODS HIT NORTHEAST TURKEY, KILL FIVE
Flash floods killed five people in Borcka town of the northeastern province of Artvin after torrential rains hit the region for the second time since August. One person was carried away as Ickale Creek overflowed and four other were killed after flood waters leveled down a house in Demirciler village.

ERDOGAN: "IF A SOLUTION IS NOT FOUND, TRNC SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED"
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave messages about the Cyprus issue as he addressed the UN General Assembly. He called on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to take initiatives. "We need to hold referenda in both sides of the island in 2010 on a likely solution. If a solution cannot be reached once again because of the Greek Cypriot party's attitude, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) should be internationally recognized," he said.

YES! U2 TO COME
All discussions whether the U2 would come to Turkey or not have finally ended. It became clear that the famous Irish band will give a concert in Istanbul on September 6, 2010. The concert will take place at Istanbul's Ataturk Stadium which has capacity of 85 thousand seats.

STARS OF FASHION WORLD TO CONVERGE TO ISTANBUL
Leading names of the fashion world will converge to Istanbul to attend the Fashionable Istanbul by Avea on October 23 and 25. A number of fashion shows by prominent designers will be held at the Dolmabahce Palace.

MONEY SHOULD FLOW FOR PEACE INSTEAD OF WEAPONS
Speaking at Princeton University, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that everybody had responsibilities for peace in the world. Noting that money, which was spent on weapons, caused financial crisis, Erdogan said that those resources should be spend on people.

Torrential rains hit northeastern province of Artvin. A house which was
built on river bed in Borcka town of Artvin collapsed, and four people were
killed. Also another citizen was dragged by flood waters, and died. Landslide destroyed the roads. Many houses were inundated.

OSMANOGLU TO BE LAID TO REST IN ISTANBUL
Osman Ertugrul Osmanoglu, the eldest member of the former Ottoman dynasty who died at the age of 97, will be laid to rest at the Shrine of Sultan Mahmud II, one of his ancestors, in Istanbul. Osmanoglu died of renal failure on Wednesday night. His grandfather Sultan Abdulhamit II was also buried at the shrine.

ERDOGAN ADDRESSES WORLD: "KEEP YOUR PROMISES"
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who reacted to President Shimon Peres of Israel at a panel discussion during the Davos Summit, reiterated Turkey's sensitivity over Palestine at the UN General Assembly this time. He called on the international community to fulfil its promises for Gazan people.

PREMIER URGES ARMENIAN LEADER NOT TO PUT CONDITIONS
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan who had turned his expected appearance in Turkey for a soccer game between Turkish and Armenian teams into a bargain. "If the Turkish president can go there, he should feel free to come here," Erdogan said. "The agreements we have initialed could be submitted to the parliament if political biases and concerns do not get in the way," Erdogan said.

TURKISH CB GOVERNOR NAMED BEST OF 2009
Euromoney magazine named Turkish Central Bank Governor Durmus Yilmaz as the best central bank governor of 2009. The magazine described Yilmaz as "the most ideal figure to steer the wheel of Turkey's economy." Yilmaz is expected to receive his award at a ceremony on October 6 in Istanbul.
