Yucel Gemici, the Sub-governor of Nusaybin town of southeastern province of Mardin, said travel without visa between Turkey and Syria began on Saturday.
Gemici said visa procedures were lifted and passages started.
Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier said Turkey and Syria started to implement a mutual visa exemption procedure on Friday. Turkish and Syrian citizens would be able to travel to each other's countries without visas starting from September 18, the ministry said.
With the new procedure, Turkish and Syrian citizens, who own diplomatic, service and general purpose passports, would not be required visas for their travels not exceeding 90 days, the ministry said.
