Friday, 18 September 2009“An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member was killed on Thursday when the vehicle he was traveling in struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in southern Afghanistan,” a statement released by NATO says.
“We announce with great sorrow that an ISAF service member was the victim of another cowardly attack by a roadside bomb emplaced by insurgents,” said Brigadier-General Eric Tremblay, ISAF Spokesperson. “I offer my sincere sympathies to his loved ones as they cope with their loss.”
The General added, “It is with much sadness that I learned about the death of this ISAF service member. To the bereaved family members and friends I express my profound condolences. He gave his life to bring much needed security and stability to Afghanistan and in this crucial role, he contributed splendidly. We will not forget his immense sacrifice.”
Yesterday, a joint Afghan-international security force seized three suspected militants in Kandahar Province in a compound which was used by a Taliban element as a weapons supply point for the region yesterday.
Officials said, “There were no Afghan, international security force or civilians casualties in this incident.”
Officials from the Afghan Ministry of Defense said that six other ISAF service members were killed after a vehicle-borne IED exploded near an ISAF convoy in Kabul yesterday. The attack also killed 10 Afghan civilians and injured 50.
This year has been the deadliest in Afghanistan for NATO troops since 2001. Almost 50 soldiers from NATO have been killed during September.
