Turkish government is working on a plan to withdraw cars over 16 years old from roads, Turkish Industry & Trade Minsiter said on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters at Frankfurt Auto Show, Nihat Ergun said government's efforts were under way to bring a cash for clunkers incentive for new car buyers to replace aging cars with new ones.
"I do not think it will take so long," Ergun said about when government's plan would become actual.
Turkish government had earlier cut the special consumption tax on vehicles under 1,600cc to 18 percent, from 37 percent, for three months to mid June, in a bid to boost car sales and revive Turkish auto market.
In June, government decided to continue tax rebate until October, however, rate of tax cut was less.
In 2003, Turkey introduced a car scrappage scheme --where car buyers were given a 3,500 TL discount on a new car, and later 4,500 TL in 2004-- if they were to scrap one that was at least 20 years old.
There are nearly 3 million cars over 16 years old, experts estimate.
