Taiwan has reported a third death resulting from A/H1N1 influenza, the island's health authority announced Friday, Xinhua reported.

A 24-year-old college student died early Friday, less than one day after he was confirmed to have the virus, said the health department of Taitung county in southeast Taiwan.

He was admitted to a Taitung hospital on Aug. 11 after he showed cold symptoms. Tests at that time did not indicate A/H1N1. He later developed pneumonia symptoms and was transferred to another hospital in Taitung, where he was diagnosed as A/H1N1 positive on Thursday.

He had not been abroad, but had accompanied 51 children on a local tour before he fell ill, according to a statement from the department. His family and all people who had close contact with him were under medical observation.

A 39-year-old man was the first in Taiwan to die from A/H1N1 on July 30. A six-year-old girl died of the flu on Aug. 16.

Twenty-two of Taiwan's 33 reported A/H1N1 influenza patients with serious symptoms have recovered and eight are still receiving treatment.

At least 1,799 people have died around the world and tens of thousands have been infected by the A(H1N1) virus, according to the World Health Organization.
