Almost 47 kg (103 lbs) of heroin has been seized in northwestern Uzbekistan's Xorazm Province, RIA Novosti reported quoting a police source.

Police discovered 18 kg (40 lbs) of the drug during a vehicle search of a local man. During questioning the man informed police of an accomplice, who also had 28.8 kg (63.5 lbs) of heroin in his car.

Police have launched a criminal case and an investigation is underway.

Central Asian republics are a major gateway to Russia and Europe for the continual flow of drugs from Afghanistan, the world's leading producer of opium and heroin.
