International Strategic Research Organization Director Dr. Sedat Laciner says Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus must build its own army with Turkey's help. Laciner said "the Greek side has a strong army with long-range missile systems. However the Turkish Cypriots has no security system but Turkey. When another country provides security, the Turkish people on the island cannot develop their own security approach. They have lost strategic thought and they show weakness in understanding security dimension of Turkish-Greek relations."
Laciner argued that new Turkish Cyprus army will be more useful and stronger:
"New army must be headed by a Turkish Cypriot General. It should include thousands of Cypriots and Turkey can give a clear support with the TRNC President's and TRNC Parliement's permission. A 30.000 strong Cyprus Army can provide a security for Turkish people on the island. TRNC also can make defense agreements with Ankara. Ankara's naval and air forces may provide service to the TRNC Army" added Dr. Laciner.
Turkey has a 30.000 troops on the island. The TRNC has its own police forces. |
