Fourteen people died and another 12 were injured when a train collided with a minibus in the Indonesian province of Central Java, the Jakarta Post said.

The accident occurred when the train, traveling on the Surakarta-Yogyakarta route, crashed into the minibus in the Jombor village on Sunday, the newspaper reported.

"It is an unguarded crossing. The accident was unavoidable. The Prameks train was speeding when the minibus crossed the grade crossing," a spokesman for the state-owned railway company said.

The paper said that the overloaded minibus, which was taking guests to a wedding, was caught on the crossing when one of its tires "exploded" due to the heavy load.

The vehicle was "dragged dozens of meters away from the accident site, derailing two of the train wheels."

A number of the injured passengers remain in a critical condition.
