Women Travel More Than Men In Turkey

Women in Turkey travel more than men, according to statistics released by the Turkish Statistical Institution, or TurkStat. The report shows that mainly women, youths and families visit domestic destinations in Turkey, Hurriyet reported.

Results from the "Households Domestic Tourism Expenditure Report" published by TurkStat show that in 2007, 13.9 million out of the 27.1 million people that traveled across Turkey were female. Moreover, the highest month of travel for women is in August during family and school holidays. In 2008, a total of 7 million people went on holiday within Turkey. Seventy-five percent of total internal travel was recorded during the peak summer months of July, August, and September. The results show that the majority of female travelers are between the ages of 25 and 44.

According to the report, women and families residing in cities often go on one-day outings to nearby seaside locations. In 2008, 30 percent of domestic travel occurred on a one-day outing basis. Households with children over the age of 15 travel more regularly on daytrips, said a survey that was carried out as part of this research.

Surveys carried out to establish were most women go when traveling in Turkey, show that most women visit cities on daily outings, and on longer holidays women often prefer to visit beach resorts in the south of Turkey. Results show that in 2008 44.8 per cent of people traveling in Turkey visited different cities.

The report shows that in 2008, 6 billon Turkish Liras were spent on internal tourism in Turkey. Five billion were spent on independent holidays and 157 million liras were spent on packet holidays, which were mainly bought by women.
