Thursday, 2 July 2009Alternative punishments are subject to debates. Some argue about their functionality, some others criticize. Yet such verdicts bring interesting scenes for public audience. Last week some courts in Turkey ordered alternative punishments. In Southeast Turkey, in Diyarbakır a man who was convicted of beating his child and wife was punished to read books about raising children and psychological development of children. The court also decided that he will give flowers to his wife once a week for five months.
This is not the single case. Some other alternative punishments are also reported. Another man convicted for beating his children had to plant five hundred young trees. Besides, recently a man convicted of domestic violence had to write a thousand times that he was sorry and hand out the notes around his village. The last case is from the province of Ağrı, in Eastern Turkey, a man charged with abusing his wife, to plant trees for six months as community service.
