Bosnian officials say the Balkan country has confirmed its first case of influenza A-H1N1 commonly known as swine flu.

Health officials said Wednesday the patient is a 24-year-old woman who arrived in Bosnia's Serb Republic last week after being in South America.

The World Health Organization says 332 people have died from the swine flu virus and more than 77,000 people have been diagnosed worldwide.

The WHO's latest statistics released Wednesday show the United Kingdom has the highest number of new infections - more than 2,000 - since the health organization's last bulletin on Monday.

The U.K., which has some 6,500 cases now, reported its third swine flu death earlier this week. The victim was a nine-year-old girl who officials say suffered underlying health problems.

The A-H1N1 strain of swine flu quickly spread around the world this year and is a highly contagious new virus.

In June, the WHO declared an influenza pandemic for the first time in more than 40 years.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
