Tuesday, 30 June 2009Rescuers, involved in the search for survivors from a Yemeni airliner that crashed off Comoros in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday, have recovered a number of bodies, regional aviation authorities said.
There were 142 passengers and 11 crew members on board an A310 plane belonging to Yemeni state carrier Yemenia Air when it crashed en route to Moroni, the capital of Comoros, from Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.
The Agency for Aviation Security and Navigation in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA) said aircraft fragments had also been spotted.
There are no reports of survivors, according to India's NDTV news channel.
China's Xinhua news agency said the flight left Paris early on Monday bound for Yemen and then was due to take off for Moroni, on Comoros. Most passengers are from Comoros, 250 miles (400 km) off the southeast coast of Africa.
The latest tragedy is the second major air crash this month.
On June 1, Air France Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris with 228 people onboard crashed in the Atlantic Ocean about four hours after it took off. A total of 51 bodies have been recovered from the site. |
