A 20-year-old woman has died of swine flu in Spain after giving birth to child by Caesarean section, national TV reported on Tuesday.

The woman was in the 28th week of pregnancy when she was admitted to the Gergorio Maranon Hospital in the capital on Monday, TVE1 said.

She suffered from serious complications of pneumonia and asthma and died the day after the child was born, becoming the first A/H1N1 fatality in Spain.

The child was born healthy, doctors said.

The Spanish Health Ministry said a total of 542 cases of the virus have been confirmed in Spain.

According to the latest World Health Organization data, 70,893 cases of A/H1N1 have been reported in 116 countries, with 311 deaths.
