Friday, 26 June 2009The president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, said Thursday in the event a solution is reached in the island (Cyprus), the European Union (EU) will do all it can to strengthen this solution.
Speaking to reporters in southern Lefkosa, Barroso indicated that opening ports to vessels of the Greek Cypriot administration is a decision to be made by Turkey.
I have come to Cyprus at a very critical stage. The sides have caught a great chance to solve the Cyprus problem and this chance should be used, Barroso said.
Barroso praised the effort of Cypriot leaders and the United Nations for the solution of the Cyprus problem.
Referring to Turkey's position on Cyprus, Barroso stressed that Turkey has a constructive attitude vis-a-vis Cyprus.
"There is an opportunity for a solution in Cyprus. This opportunity can not last forever," Barroso also said.
Barroso met with the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Mehmet Ali Talat on Thursday. He had a luncheon with President Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias at the buffer zone in Cyprus. |
