Namibia Seeks Russian Investment, Technology |

Thursday, 25 June 2009Namibia wants to expand cooperation with Russia, especially in trade, investment and technology, President Hifikepunye Pohamba said on Thursday.
"New opportunities are opening up for deeper cooperation in a variety of fields, primarily in trade and investment," the president said during a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
He told the Russian leader that said Namibia wants "to use the modern technology and management expertise that is used in your country."
Medvedev arrived in Namibia earlier on Thursday as part of a four-nation tour of Africa to discuss developing trade and energy projects.
Medvedev and Pohamba are expected to discuss cooperation in developing Namibia's mineral deposits, electricity, transport and tourism.
Presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko told reporters that Namibia is short of energy resources, importing almost all its electricity from South Africa, and is examining which sector to develop - hydropower or nuclear.
He said bilateral turnover in 2008 was $6.35 million, and that Russian business circles have recently been showing more interest in entering Namibia's market. The country is rich in diamonds, uranium, coal, lead, zinc, copper, tin, manganese, silver, gold, and natural gas. |
