Wednesday, 24 June 2009Turkey's Chief EU Negotiator and State Minister Egemen Bagis said Tuesday that Turkey's EU bid was not just the enthusiasm of Justice and Development (AK) Party but Turkey's shared enthusiasm.
Speaking at a dinner in Istanbul, Bagis said the EU process contributed to Turkey's economic development.
"If the foreign investments and the income per capita have increased in Turkey, the EU process had a role in this. If the banks in the U.S. and Europe are going bankrupt one after the other, and our banking system is solid, the EU process has also a part in this," said Bagis.
Bagis who said there may be circles in Turkey worried about threat of Sharia or military coups, underlined that the EU was the greatest insurance against these threats.
"It is well known that radical ideologies don't survive in the EU. The EU is a project that is strengthening the individual and therefore it is the right kind of path for Turkey," said Bagis.
Stressing that their administration would continue reforms, Bagis said, "There is a two-year period ahead without elections. We want to make a judicial and constitutional reform worthy of Turkey." |
