Monday, 15 June 2009A survey carried out by an Uzbek research centre shows not many schoolchildren are aware of activities of extremist organizations in Uzbekistan, the Vatanparvar newspaper said on 12 June 2009.
In particular, the newspaper said that when asked by the Ijtimoiy Fikr public opinion study centre whether they are "aware of activities of the Wahhabi [Islamic movement], Hezb-e Tahrir [extremist organization] and Akramiya [illegal religious group] in Uzbekistan, 36.8 per cent of schoolchildren said they were aware of the issue, 35.9 per cent said they had heard something about them and 27.3 per cent said that they knew nothing about them".
The analysis showed that young people in southwestern Bukhoro, southernmost Surkhondaryo, central Jizzakh and Navoi regions "are not really aware of religious extremist movements' activities" in the country. At the same time, youngsters from northwestern Khorazm, central Samarqand, eastern Namangan and Fargona regions "were more aware of this issue", the report said. |
