Saturday, 13 June 2009Turkey's Permanent Representative to the United Nations said on Friday that Turkey expected North Korea to give up its nuclear test.
Baki Ilkin, Turkey's Permanent Representative to the UN, chaired the meeting in which the UN Security Council has voted unanimously to impose tougher sanctions on North Korea. Turkey currently occupies rotating presidency of the UN Security Council.
After the meeting, Ilkin told Turkish reporters that Turkey was against proliferation of nuclear weapons and it hoped that North Korea would abandon nuclear test and return back to the negotiating table.
Ilkin said that Turkey was deeply concerned over nuclear test carried out by North Korea on May 25 and such steps impaired stability and confidence in the region.
North Korea should return back to six-party talks, the best way to denuclearize Korea, he said. |
