Saturday, 13 June 2009A Turkish general said on Friday that a memorandum of understanding signed between Turkey and Iraq would contribute to regional peace.
Gen. Metin Gurak, the head of the Communication Department of the General Staff, said that the memorandum of understanding between Turkey and Iraq would contribute to peace in the Middle East.
"The memorandum of understanding signed by the two neighboring countries that have historical, cultural and traditional ties will contribute to peace in the Middle East that is still facing negative developments," Gurak told a weekly press briefing at the General Staff headquarters in Ankara.
Turkish Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Hasan Igsiz and Iraqi Deputy Chief of Staff Gen. Nasier Abadi signed a memorandum of understanding on military training, technical and scientific cooperation in Ankara on June 9.
Gurak said that the memorandum would lay the legal groundwork for further agreements.
"Our friendly relations based on brotherhood, mutual understanding and cooperation will further improve with this memorandum," the general said.
Also referring to Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug's recent visits to foreign countries, Gurak said that Basbug participated in a conference of chiefs of staff of Balkan countries in Belgrade, Serbia on June 9, and defined the conference as fruitful.
Gurak also said that Basbug paid a formal visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 10-11 and held talks with the members of the Presidency, the defense minister and the chief of staff.
The general said that Basbug was visiting Croatia on Friday, and would discuss military issues with Croatian president and chief of general staff.
"Turkey will continue to support preservation of territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence in the Balkans," Gurak said.
Gurak also said that Turkey would also support Bosnia-Herzegovina's bid to become a NATO member. |
