Saturday, 13 June 2009President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Mehmet Ali Talat said Friday a just and permanent peace in Cyprus would be reached by negotiations.
President Talat received the Speaker of Turkish Parliament, Koksal Toptan, in Lefkosa on Friday.
Speaking to reporters while receiving Toptan, Talat said that they wanted to see a solution (in Cyprus) in 2009.
An agreement reached in Cyprus would have to be approved by the Turkish Parliament, Talat stressed.
We expect both the negotiations in Cyprus to give out a positive result without making concessions from basic principles, and the European Union (EU) to fulfill its duties and isolations imposed on the Turkish Cypriots to end, Toptan said.
Toptan said that, as always, relations between Turkey and the TRNC continued positively.
"Everyone should be careful in solving the Cyprus problem and there are important points everyone must accept. We share the same notions with the TRNC on this matter," Toptan said.
"We have never regarded a deadlock as a solution. The hastiness with which the EU accepted the Greek Cypriot administration as a member caused difficulties in solving the Cyprus problem," Toptan said. |
