Greece Could Host Russia-NATO Meeting in Late June

A meeting of the Russia-NATO council at the level of foreign ministers could be held on June 27 on the Greek island of Corfu, Russia's envoy to the military alliance said on Wednesday.

"If our partners agree on this date, I do not rule out that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov could take part in it," Dmitry Rogozin said.

The Russia-NATO Council held a meeting at the level of ambassadors in late May to discuss security in the Euro-Atlantic region and Russia-NATO relations, which were temporarily severed after last August's Georgia-Russia war.

Rogozin said the foreign ministers' talks must open the way to a resumption of cooperation between Russian and NATO forces.

NATO resumed formal contacts with Russia on April 29. However, relations took a setback last month with the expulsion of two Russian NATO diplomats from Brussels. Russia responded by expelling two NATO officials from Moscow and boycotting a NATO-Russia Council session.

The Russian Foreign Ministry recently expressed hope that the remaining obstacles to the Russia-NATO Council's work would soon be removed.

NATO's new secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, is expected to visit Moscow later this year.
