3,290 Prisoners Released By Pardon Act In Azerbaijan Thus Far

A total of 3,290 prisoners have been released by Pardon Act adopted upon initiative of Azerbaijan's first lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Good-Will Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO and member of parliament Mehriban Aliyeva on occasion of Novruz Holiday, Penal Service press service told Trend News.

Azerbaijani parliament adopted Pardon Act on Occasion of Novruz Holiday submitted by Mehriban Aliyeva on March 17.

According to early reports, 9,000 prisoners will be released by the act.

Nearly 1,055 prisoners serve sentences in penitentiaries, 762 in detention facilities and 1,473 in special facilities.

Thirty of the released prisoners are women.

The exact number of the prisoners to be released will be available after pardon act fulfilled.

Eight Pardon Acts were adopted in 1995. A total of 39,000 prisoners were released at that time.
