Sunday, 31 May 2009The Turkish foreign minister travelled to the United States on Sunday.
Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu left for the United States to hold talks in Washington D.C. and New York till June 5.
"Turkey will take over the rotating presidency of the United Nations (UN) Security Council as of the beginning of June," Davutoglu told reporters before he flew to the United States.
Davutoglu defined the presidency as an important and big responsibility, and expressed Turkey's determination to be a fairly active president for a month.
Turkey will hand over the rotating presidency to Uganda in July. Turkey's UN Security Council non-permanent membership will end on December 31, 2010.
The Turkish minister will meet U.S. executives at the White House, Department of State, Senate and House of Representatives, particularly U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
He will deliver speeches at think-tank organizations, and attend the annual conference of the American Turkish Council in Washington D.C.
In New York, Davutoglu will set a schedule about the prior issues to be taken up at the UN and UN Security Council during one-month presidency of Turkey.
The 28th Annual Conference on U.S.-Turkish Relations, jointly organized by the American-Turkish Council and the Turkish U.S. Business Council, will bring together leaders from Turkey and the U.S. at the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center at the National Harbor, Washington, D.C. from May 31 to June 3. The theme of this year's Conference is "U.S.-Turkey: Overcoming Challenges in an Era of Change."
Key speakers from Turkey include Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmet Davutoglu; Minister of National Defense, Vecdi Gonul; Minister of Transportation, Binali Yildirim; and Chief of the Turkish General Staff, General Ilker Basbug.
The annual conference on U.S.-Turkish Relations is a forum for government and military officials, leaders of commerce and academia to discuss the issues and opportunities that bind the United States and Turkey. Conference participants will discuss the expansion of joint-business opportunities for corporations in the United States, Turkey and the region; regional security issues; bi-lateral trade; energy security and development; the global recession and national recovery; and developments in Science, Technology and Research. |
