The United Nations (UN) Security Council held a meeting on Cyprus on Friday in which the most recent Cyprus report of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was handled and discussed.
The council's meeting was led by term president Russia and was closed to the press. During the meeting, the participants made a call to the two parties in Cyprus to speed up negotiations and find a solution timely. The participants also discussed the possibility to extend the UN Peacekeeping Forces' (UNFICYP) presence in Cyprus for an additional six months.
The United Nations Security Council is expected to make a decision on May 28 to extend UNFICYP's presence for six months based on Ban Ki-moon's latest report on Cyprus.
