US Vice President Biden left Sarajevo in order to visit Serbia's capital Belgrade, the second stop of his landmark Balkans trip.
During his speech in Bosnia's parliament, Biden promised that Washington would help Balkan nations to join the European Union.
"The door is open for the countries of this region for the first time in history to be an integral part of a free Europe. The U.S. will help you walk through that door" Biden said.
The speaker of the Parliament Beriz Belkic welcomed Biden's visit and commitments. He said that "Vice President Biden's presence here underscores the commitment of the United States to the people of this country, and highlights the importance U.S. foreign policy-makers place on Bosnian and Herzegovina's stability, security, and ultimately its integration into NATO and the European Union."
Bosnians are eager for the U.S. to get involved more deeply in Bosnia. But many people in the Serbia still view America as anti-Serb because of the 1999 U.S.-led NATO bombing of Serbia. Nationalist parties continued their oppositon over Biden's visit.
Biden will finish his tour on Thursday in Kosovo.
