TAKSIM AFTER 31 YEARS
On May 1 Labor & Solidarity Day, laborers gathered in Taksim Square (in Istanbul) and left carnations on Kazanci slope to commemorate people who were killed on May 1, 1977. Taksim, for the first time since 1978, hosted exciting celebrations. During demonstrations on May 1, 1977, 34 people were killed.
RETURN OF BULENT ARINC
Bulent Arinc, former parliament speaker from Justice & Development (AK) Party, became deputy prime minister with the cabinet revision approved by President Abdullah Gul. Nine new names in the cabinet are; Bulent Arinc (deputy premier), Cevdet Yilmaz (state minister), Selma Aliye Kavaf (state minister), Sadullah Ergin (justice minister), Ahmet Davutoglu (foreign minister), Mustafa Demir (public works & housing minister), Omer Dincer (labor & social security minister), Nihat Ergun (industry & trade minister), Taner Yildiz (energy minister).

WORKERS AT TAKSIM AFTER 31 YEARS
Workers celebrated May 1 Labor Day, which was declared public holiday, at Taksim Square after 31 years. Clashes took place between security teams and those who attempted to illegally participate in demonstrations from backstreets. A total of 40 people including 26 police officers were injured during demonstrations. Police detained 108 people during May Day rally in Istanbul.
REVISION IN CABINET
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan reshuffled his cabinet and announced the new cabinet members. Nine new names were included in the list of council of ministers. Bulent Arinc who was appointed as the deputy prime minister became the most surprising name in the list. Erdogan said Ahmet Davutoglu would replace Ali Babacan as foreign minister, and Babacan became deputy prime minister for economy.

CABINET OF CHANGE
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a change in the cabinet according to the expectations of business world, diplomacy and public. Erdogan announced the cabinet change yesterday. Eight ministers were left out of the cabinet, while nine new names entered the government. Bulent Arinc and Ali Babacan became deputy premiers. Babacan will be responsible from the coordination of economy. Erdogan's adviser Ahmet Davutoglu became foreign minister. There are two female ministers
in the cabinet: National Education Minister Nimet Cubukcu and State Minister Selma Kavaf.
PEACE AT SQUARE, WAR AT STREET
While workers were celebrating May 1 --which was declared official holiday-- at squares like a festival, demonstrators with masks shadowed the peace. The demonstrators threw molotov cocktails and stones to police officers, and damaged the business places and ATMs. Several business places burned and vehicles in the streets were damaged. A total of 52 people including 22 police officers were injured, and 108 people were detained.

WORKERS AT TAKSIM SQUARE AFTER 32 YEARS
Turkish authorities let union workers rally Friday at the site of a deadly
May Day demonstration in 1977. Workers celebrated Labor Day at Taksim Square in Istanbul with a great joy. Nearly 5,000 members of labor unions including DISK, KESK, Hak-Is and Turk-IS entered Taksim Square by chanting slogans. Labor unions laid wreaths at the Republic Monument in the square. A total of 25,000 police officers served in Istanbul on May 1.

A historic day was lived in Turkey 32 years after celebrations on May 1,
1977 when 36 people were killed. May 1 Labor & Solidarity Day, which was
celebrated as official holiday for the first time, was more peaceful than the
previous years despite several tense incidents. After Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler said, "we allow a reasonable majority (at Taksim Square)", nearly 5,000 laborers marched Taksim Square. However, provokers were also on the stage. Groups wearing masks turned backstreets into a war field. Demonstrators attacked police officers with molotov cocktails and stones they ripped from pavements. They damaged banks and business places and burned vehicles. 108 demonstrators were
detained. 21 police officers and 20 civilians were injured.
