16 October 2004 A source within the German government confirmed that Germany is considering the sale of two leopard tanks to Turkey.
Turkey has been interested in purchasing over 200 of the German tanks for quite some time. Now that Turkey has been given the green light to begin accession negotiations with the European Union, Germany may soon be able to fulfill Turkey's request.
Beyond the Atlantic in Washington, officials in the Bush administration approved of a $3.9 billion comprehensive package for Turkey to rebuild its fleet of F-16s. The package includes appropriations for the airplane's systems, which are produced by Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Harris and BAE Systems. The Pentagon's Defense and Security Cooperation Agency, which believes Turkey should modernize its air force, proposed the package to the US Congress.
