The EU hopes that political stability in Georgia will be achieved, as this is a necessary condition for the further cooperation within the framework of the EU Eastern Partnership program, Chairwoman EU-Georgia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee in European Parliament Marie Anne Isler Béguin said.
"O course, stability is a necessary condition for further cooperation. We need country with internal stable conditions and without political crisis," Isler Béguin told Trend News.
The Eastern Partnership, which will be formally established at the EU summit in Prague and Brussels on May 7, proposes closer co-operation of six post-Soviet countries - Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Armenia and Belarus. Facilitation of visa regime for countries participating in the EU, introduction of free trade zones and conclusion of strategic agreements will be reviewed.
Program's prospects depend on the political situation within the country.
The Georgian opposition is staging protest demonstrations demanding President's resignation of April 9. Opposition members piquet the building of parliament, President's residence, Public television and state offices.
The EU expects that the democracy will be reorganized in Georgia, Isler Béguin added.
Both sides should take a step towards each other. Today's meeting was the first and positive step in that direction, Isler Béguin said.
The meeting of the Georgian opposition with President is taking place today in Tbilisi. The meeting was organized at the suggestion of Saakashvili, who called on the opposition to halt demonstrations and sit at the negotiating table. The opposition earlier refused to negotiate, referring to the repeated violations of his promises.
"The European Union hopes that the dialogue will continue and the solution will be found. Political crisis can be solved through a compromise, said Isler Béguin.
Talking about the EU role in the dialogue between the government and the opposition in Georgia, Isler Béguin hoped that the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby will play an important role as mediator in the process of dialogue.
