Israel currently is not a serious threat to Iran, and its appeal to the UN may be due to the fact that Tehran does not want to get close to Washington, which is allied with Tel Aviv.
The representative of Iran to the UN Mohammad Khazaee (Mohammad Khazai) on Wednesday asked the organization to protect against "unlawful threats" by Israel. In a letter addressed to members of the UN Security Council, Khazaee urged the UN to use all its capacity to stop "illegal and brazen" threat to Israel. On Thursday, Israeli President Shimon Peres said that Israel has no intention to attack Iran.
"The reason why Tehran could ask the UN for the protection of Israel, could be that hardliners in Iran's politics do not want to progress in US-Iranian relations," - said to Trend News American expert on the Middle East.
Officials from Israel and Iran have repeatedly addressed the threat to each other. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke of the need to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.
Israeli officials, including President Shimon Peres said that Israel could have a preventive strike on Iranian nuclear sites in case of "save the Tehran tough position." On Thursday, Israeli President Shimon Peres said that Israel has no intention to attack Iran.
Relations between Iran and many countries around the world are compounded because of the development of Tehran's nuclear program. Iran insists on the peaceful nature of the development program, while the United States, Western and Eastern countries fear that Tehran build nuclear weapons.
Observers believe that, in spite of Israeli threats, its not the real danger to Tehran.
Despite Israeli threats, it does not have the capacity to attack Iran for several reasons, said an Iranian expert on Israel Ganizade Hasan (Hasan Ganizadeh). Iran's nuclear facilities are located in different zones of the country, which would complicate an attack on them by Israel, believes Ganizade.
"Iran has a strong army, and perhaps Israel would not be able to resist if Tehran on a counter attack," - said to Trend News by telephone Ganizade. An attack on Iran, according to him, "may end up worse for Israel itself, because of its nuclear facilities are concentrated in one area, and Iran will have the opportunity to make it easier for their destruction.
In Israel there are several nuclear power plants. With regard to military developments, the Israeli officials have never denied nor confirmed the existence of the country's nuclear weapons. According to estimates of some experts, Israel has about 180 nuclear warheads.
The reason for the treatment of Iran in the UN, according to American experts Katz, is that tough-minded forces inside Iran do not want to approach it with the United States.
Relations between Washington and Tehran were severed 30 years ago after the seizure of U.S. embassy in Tehran. Moreover, the former U.S. president George Bush, called Iran the "axis of evil", that is, to countries that support terrorism in the world.
The current United States President Barack Obama took a more loyal attitude towards Iran and said the possibility of negotiations with Tehran without preconditions. Some radical forces inside Iran - against these negotiations, and that is why committing acts that may hinder the development of relations between Washington and Tehran.
Thus, the United States, as allies of Israel, supported the operation in Gaza, despite the fact that it was incompatible with the UN resolutions on the need to end the bloodshed in the enclave.
"Another way to prevent the development of US-Iranian relations is the current trial of an American journalist of Iranian origin Roxanne Saber", - said to Trend News via e-mail, Katz, professor of the Department of International Relations at American University, George Mason (George Mason University).
Saber was arrested because she continued to journalism in Iran, despite the fact that she has been stripped off her license. But then, according to those involved in the investigation, Saber admitted to spying. United States have repeatedly called on Iran to release Saber, but the positive response from Tehran was not followed.
Israel ith its threads, as believes Ganizade, wants to divert the attention of people from their failed policy in recent times.
The victims of the latest military attack by Israel in the Gaza Strip to destroy Hamas, according to Palestinian medics, were more than 1300 Palestinians.
On the other hand, experts believe that Iran's statements could be due to the fact that Israel does not believe in the success of the negotiations between the United States and Iran.
"Israel believes that by doing so, Iran wants to pull the time and absolutely no plans to discontinue development of nuclear programs", - said to Trend News by telephone Iranian expert in the Middle East, Ahmed Zeydabadi. Israel, in his opinion, does not want to prolong the resolution of an issue relating to the development of Iran's nuclear program, and therefore threatens to attack him.
Experts believe that, despite the fact that the United States would improve relations with Tehran, they will not take any action against Israel. "The Iranian government knows about it," - said Katz.
Israel, according to Katz, "will perform their promises, if feels real oncoming threat from Iran."
"Most of the world in this case would be to blame Israel, but on the other hand, will be grateful to him for what he did, because Iran represents a much greater threat to the whole world, not only for the United States and Israel," - said Katz.
