ANBE -- Tajikistan's Prosecutor-General's Office says that the investigation into the killing of Colonel Oleg Zakharchenko continues more than a year after his death and that those responsible will be found.

Zakharchenko, who was the chief of Tajikistan's OMON antiriot police, was killed in February 2008 in the eastern Rasht district while he and other OMON officers approached the headquarters of the regional anti-organized crimes office.

Former Rasht district police chief Mirzokhuja Ahmadov, who was an opposition commander during Tajikistan's civil war, said his officers thought they were being attacked and opened fire on Zakharchenko and his officers but it is unclear when or by whom he was killed.

Ahmadov told RFE/RL's Tajik Service that when President Emomali Rahmon visited Rasht last autumn, he met with Ahmadov and orally pardoned him for his actions during the civil war.

Ahmadov added that up to now he has not received any document about his amnesty or an investigation into Zakharchenko's death. He said he does not oppose an investigation and does not consider himself a suspect.
