Monday, 13 April 2009Professor Ferit Bernay, former rector of the Ondokuz Mayiz University in the northern province of Samsun, was detained under the Ergenekon probe.
Earlier in the day, Professor Mehmet Haberal, rector of the Baskent University in Ankara, and Professor Fatih Hilmioglu, former rector of the Inonu University in Malatya, were detained after police searched their houses and offices.
Police took five bags full of hard-drive, documents and CDs out of Bernay's house.
Meanwhile, 18 people including Professor Ayse Yuksek, member of the Executive Board of the Organization for Support for Contemporary Life (CYDD), were detained during searches in Istanbul.
Police also search office of Professor Osman Metin Ozturk, rector of the Giresun University in the northern province.
Police searched simultaneously some places including branches of the CYDD in several provinces after the High Criminal Court in Istanbul ordered search of suspects' homes and workplaces upon a request by five prosecutors carrying out the investigation.
