EU Should Not Require Visa From Turkish Patients, Businessmen, Tourists and Exchange Students |

Sunday, 29 March 2009EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee Chair, Joost Lagendijk, said in a motion on Saturday that EU should not require visa from Turkish citizens travelling to Europe for medical treatment, student and academic exchange programs or business and touristic purposes.
Lagendijk submitted a motion to the European Commission asking the legal consequences of a recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) decision ruling that "no visas could be required of Turkish citizens travelling to Europe for the purposes of providing a service."
Lagendijk argued that ECJ's recent decision, like many similar decisions before it, was very important and asked the Commission, which is entitled with protecting the EU treaties, whether or not it could change Turkey's position in its visa regime.
Lagendijk further questioned whether the Commission, apart from the decision of the court, shared the view that, requirement of visa from citizens of a country carrying out Accession talks with the EU, created an unaccountable situation harming that country's economic and political integration, a situation also not serving EU's interests.
The response to Lagendijk's motion, to be written by the Commission's Justice Affairs unit, bears importance as it will show how ECJ's recent decision is interpreted by the EU. |
