Thursday, 26 March 2009A helicopter carrying five people, including Turkish Grand Unity Party (BBP) leader Muhsin Yazicioglu, crashed in the central province of Kahramanmaras (southeastern Turkey) yesterday.
The five passengers were reportedly injured, but there were no immediate reports of whether or not they were in critical condition.
Yazicioglu and four other BBP members were traveling from Kahramanmaras to Yozgat to hold an election rally there.
Vedat Turk, the BBP provincial chairman in Kahramanmaras, said Yazicioglu left the city yesterday afternoon after an election rally in the city to hold another rally in Yozgat.
"We later heard that the helicopter taking Yazicioglu and other BBP members to Yozgat crashed. We established contact with one of our friends on board on the phone and he said he was injured. We couldn't get any information on Yazicioglu's health condition because we lost the connection with our friend," Turk noted.
Sources said it was the first time the BBP had hired a helicopter for use during an election campaign.
